New members of the Society are always welcome. Our current membership includes experienced singers and musicians as well as others with little in the way of musical education. The common denominator is a love for singing, an acceptable singing voice, enthusiasm and commitment.
Membership subscriptions (per season) are as follows:
Full member: £135 (payable in full or in three termly payments of £45)
Students and under 25s: £40
If you considering joining us you are more than welcome to attend a rehearsal to help you decide. There will be a short, informal audition before you join.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm between September and June in Lion Walk Church Hall.
Singers are expected to make every effort to attend all rehearsals. Please remember to bring a pencil!
You are assured of a warm welcome and a chance to get know other members during our coffee break. We regularly hold a raffle on Wednesdays to raise additional funds for the Society.
Vocal scores can be either purchased or hired through from the Society's librarian.
Concerts
The choir performs three main concerts a year and follows a policy of in-depth preparation of weekly rehearsals, generally over a 10 week period. In addition, our annual Christmas concert held in Colchester's Moot Hall and featuring the choirs of two local primary schools is always hugely popular, but we have yet to resume this since the pandemic.
Concert dress is long black for the ladies (skirts or trousers), and dinner jacket and bow tie for the gentlemen, along with our branded music folder.
Get involved
You will find Colchester Choral Society a very friendly and close-knit community. The governance of the choir is managed by a small committee, but we rely on all our members to support the choir in practical ways and with fund raising. The committee is always happy to receive feedback and looks to harness the talents of our members in ways that can support the Society.
We hold regular fund raising activities, such as quizzes and wine tastings.
